RolePlay Today As Opposed to Yesturday

Mon Apr 24, 2006, 9:35 AM
OK.. first of all I am not even sure if anyone will read this but I need to get it off my chest so bare with me..
Roleplaying used to be an art.. like 5,6,7 years ago back when I started.. for me, as a writer it used to force me to be creative, but making a character (or several like I have now) and building them to be their own person. And I had to play them as they were and it was beautiful, they had morals and goals and self respect, They were who I made them to be and they practically played themselves. I mean sure I was pulling the strings but the storylines made me think and made my character think and things were just so great because the art and the beauty and the complexity of it made RolePlay Games skyrocket. People were detailed then, like 4 or 5 paragraphs just to walk across a room and get a drink of water. Of course I am not counting the speeders which was a whole different type of art in itself.
Now, I consider just about everyone a Noob (a newbie in the roleplaying world) unless they are from MSN before it went to paying customers only and shortly after that. I guess I see them as such because now it's all about how good your character looks and how many other characters your charrie can sleep with. RP today is nothing more then soft core porn for the nerds and geeks out there (Yes I am one of those nerds but along different lines). Even with the changed in the RP community I still stay loyal to my characters.. I do not flaunt them around and talk about their "Tight ass and perky breasts" I give them their dignity and because of that most of my characters are single, Because I want to look at them and see that IF they were real they could go out in society and get respect, for how they think and their morals. Not step out of the text and not be anyone but I prostitute, and not even that for most of them because at least prostiturtes make money with what they do.
I guess I put all of this down to say that I miss the art of it that we may very well never get back again.. No one cares enough anymore to try and get it back. I guess I shoudln't say no one because I do.. but it seems like when you make a storyline that has the qualities of the older RPGs no one wants in because you've made too many rules. Well the rules are there to try and put the peices of what used to be back together again. Maybe it'll never happen, but hey, a girl can dream can't she?
End Of Rant..
Sophie
